Swan House
Swan House is an award-winning Bed & Breakfast
situated in the heart of Hastings Old Town.
This beautifully restored medieval house recently won the 1066 Award for Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure - even before its first anniversary in June. It has been much-praised by guests for its thoughtful service and exquisite interior, where polished panelling and oak beams sit alongside contemporary comforts.
Owners Brendan and Lionel have thought of everything and, what’s most amazing, is that there is no charge for any of the extras. There is wireless internet access or use of a computer dedicated to guests, a phone to use freely - including international calls, tea and coffee making facilities, DVD players in each room, bath robes and gorgeous bath products and then there’s Brendan, on-call and happy to suggest places to visit or help plan an itinerary.
There are four bedrooms all with wonderful marble-tiled en suitebathrooms. The Renaissance Room is the grandest and a favourite with honeymooners; the Garden Room has ground-floor access and opens onto apretty garden. All have an air of opulence. Guests come and go as theyplease and have to themselves the large sitting room with gloriously comfysofas, inglenook fireplace and well-stocked book shelves.Just reading the breakfast menu will make you want to stay long enough to sample the lot. Smoothies, muesli and bread from Judges, Greek yoghurt with prunes, eggs Benedict, sausages and scrambled eggs, kippers with parsley butter and smoked haddock from Peters on Rock-a-Nore. Swan House is a founder member of Sussex Breakfast, a campaign to support local farmers and suppliers, so while the eggs come from Catsfield, the meat is from Archers in Westfield, and even the jams are bought from the weekly country market on All Saints Street.
Swan house is also a showcase for local talent and business: two picture windows are decorated with agate from Stone Corner and there are murals by award-winning Hastings artist Melissa White (www.fairlyte.co.uk). The toiletries and some furnishings are sourced from Lionel's online interiors emporium No Eight (www.noeight.co.uk).
