Gorgeous to look at, luxurious under-foot, an oriental rug makes a unique centerpiece for any room - contemporary or traditional. At Oriental Rugs Online, every rug is a work of art, handcrafted using ancient techniques. There are more than 150 to choose from, both kilims and knotted rugs.
It may be an online emporium, but if you’re local to the area, you can pop down to Norman Road in St Leonards check out the rugs for yourself. Seeing and touching them is a crucial part of choosing one. The business is run by Patrick Robbins and Justin Nahum, and at Patrick Robbins Interiors you can browse the rugs at leisure. Either look online first and pick out your favourites, or wander in and see what’s there. The best thing about it is that Patrick and Justin have a very generous returns policy: you can take a rug or two home to see which fits your space and furniture best, and whatever doesn’t work, bring it back without any quibbles! So even if you buy online, you’re not stuck with the wrong rug.
Most of the rugs at Oriental Rugs are Turkish or Persian and have been coloured with vegetable dye, so are naturally mellow. The majority are new, and some are old or antique. There are kilims - also known as a flatweave – which are very durable. They make great wall-hanging, too. A knotted rug is a more complicated construction. The framework is made up of vertical and horizontal threads, to which the coloured yarn is tied, leaving both ends protruding. The entire framework is knotted in this way, and the ends then trimmed to create an even-pile rug. Obviously a lot more work than a kilim.
Justin’s tip is: “The first thing to consider when choosing a rug is size. Consider maximum and minimum dimensions for your space. After this, it becomes a matter of taste and what style of interior the rug will sit alongside.” And there’s plenty to choose from here.
