Welcome to our March 2008 Edition!

The Editor!

March: hello to spring, the month of blossom, Easter eggs and new beginnings. But for us at the Hastings Handbook, the time of new starts also heralds a rather sad goodbye. The Hastings Handbook has been our baby for the past 16 months and we’ve nurtured it with love but it’s about to be usurped by another kind of baby. Yes, my partner and I are expecting our first child this spring! Without the time to care for both, we’re sorry to say goodbye to the mag but it marks a hopeful new start for the two of us.

We were quite new to Hastings when we started so each month we’ve been fascinated to discover something else new - or old - about our adopted town and the countryside around it. We’ve really enjoyed producing it and hope we’ve inspired our readers to get out and enjoy some of the many great things that our town has to offer.

And so - on with the last issue, where we meet lovely St Leonards locals the McCarrons in their wonderful gift shop and mellow jazz singer Maureen Connett at Pissarro’s, reminding us of just how many interesting folk we’ve been lucky enough to meet and befriend in this town. Don’t forget it’s the Hastings Half Marathon this month, so if you’re not taking part yourself then get out and cheer on the pack, keeping an eye out for Erica Smith’s stripy socks - maybe you’ll be inspired to enter once you’ve read her account of going from neutral firmly into running gear; it’s not yet too late! We visit Summerfields Wood, take a long walk around Udimore, meet local hero and pioneer of the computer age Alan Turing and take High Tea with Peggy Garrett of our favourite local caterer Love Sussex.

So a final farewell from us to you, our readers, to our loyal advertisers, generous contributors and the many friends and supporters we’ve met along the way (too many to mention here) especially those who got in touch to tell us how much they liked the magazine.

Thank you all and we wish you all the very best for the future!

Jane
