Haunted Hastings!!!

We all know that Halloween is the spookiest time of the year. The 31st of October has long marked the eve of winter, as the night when the dead are caught between the world of the living and the grave, and come back to roam the earth… or so legend has it!

Here in Hastings, there are many legends of long-dead local characters with unfinished business, who return to our streets where there are regular sightings of familiar, ghostly figures. We’re also lucky enough to have a local expert to keep us informed.

Tina Lakin has been giving guided ghost walks of Hastings for 14 years. They’ve become increasingly popular and she’s now the published author of two books, with more in the pipeline. “I’ve always been interested in things that go bump in the night,” says Tina. “Hastings is such an old town and there are many historical events that have left a trace behind.”

Up on Tackleway roams a tragic figure from Hastings’ fishing legacy. An old lady, weeping and distressed, watches out to sea in the futile hope her family will return. She’s the grandmother of a fishing family, left alone on land while her beloved family perished at sea. So if you should go to comfort a lady fitting this description, don’t be surprised if she disappears…

The Anchor on George Street is reportedly the most haunted pub in Hastings. In the back room, the figure of a man in a tall black hat has been seen on many occasions. Could he be the man who sentenced criminals in the court room here, back in the 1500s?

There are many more stories to hear, so don’t miss an exciting variety of ghostly fun on and around Halloween. There’s Dinner with the Dead, Spooky Speed-dating, Gruesome Games, a talk on vampires by Paul Le Breton, and on Halloween night itself an early, fun walk for children and a later, scarier one for adults. Fancy dress encouraged!
