Jin Shin Jyutsu

by Hilary Totah

I was interested to meet Ranjana Appoo who came to my yoga classes. We got talking, as you do, and she told me she was practising Jin Shin Jyutsu and Emotional Freedom Technique, both of which I had come across in my life as an alternative therapy cognoscenti and practitioner. I liked her approach – as both of these therapies are techniques she can teach her clients to do for themselves. Taking self-responsibility by learning a technique for healing, a set of exercises, changing the diet or making other lifestyle changes is an effective and empowering way to improve health.

When Ranjana offered me some Jin shin Jyutsu treatments I was glad to lie down in her lovely treatment conservatory and just let her gentle touch release the flow of my energy. Sometimes having a treatment can be a great way to have a wonderfully relaxing hour, letting go to someone’s healing hands. I certainly left feeling less stressed and much more centred and relaxed.

Jin Shin Jyutsu is based on a theory of energy pathways – and the energy locks that allow the pathways to be free flowing. When one or more of these safety energy locks become blocked, a local disruption can occur, eventually resulting in disharmony of the energetic pathway. In the Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu, light pressure is applied with the fingertips to the safety energy locks restoring harmonious flow along the pathways.

There is much in the theory that reminds me of shiatsu meridians and acupoints, not least of all that they both come from Japan. Originally discovered by Japanese master Jiro Murai from ancient texts, Jin Shin Jyutsu has been further developed by Mary Burmeister, American teacher and practitioner. It is effective in relieving many conditions including pain and emotional problems.

Self-help is an important component of Jin Shin Jyutsu and in her introductory workshops, Ranjana teaches people simple self-help exercises to do in bed, at work or sitting on the bus, to relieve stress and to kick start their own energetic body. After explaining what Jin shin Jyutsu is she shows how to use the safety energy locks to boost the immune system, relieve pain and for general well-being. Ranjana also works with specific issues which people bring to the class so that they can go home with some specific techniques which will benefit them.
