Hastings memories

Michael Foster MP for HastingsHastings People:

Shirley Learthart

You probably know that Shirley contributes a popular monthly health column to the Hastings Handbook. As a nurse who runs her clinic Vital Signs Health Check from The Wellington Natural Health Centre, Shirley is full of surprisingly easy tips on how to stay well. We find out what keeps Shirley so cheery and discover that even the healthiest of nurses indulges sometimes…

Are you from around here?
I was born in Worthing but moved to Hastings when I was aged 18, so consider myself Hastonian as I’ve been here all my adult life.

Favourite pub?
My favourite pub is a few miles out of Hastings - The Queen’s Head in Icklesham, with live music and great food. I also like a few pubs in the Old Town especially the FILO and Porters.

Fish and chips?
The Blue Dolphin in the Old Town, the fish and chips taste even better eaten while sitting on the beach.

Do you read a local paper?
I read the Hastings Observer most weeks to keep up with local news. But the  most interesting local mag has got to be the Hastings Handbook!

Favourite local place for a walk?
I walk most days in Alexandra Park with my Doberman, never get bored with it, such fantastic trees. I often see a pure white squirrel there. Some of the squirrels are looking very overfed and obese!

Favourite local landmark?
The views from the West Hill and the East Hill are amazing. Not many towns can boast such a great natural feature.

Best thing about Hastings?
The history of the place and the well-preserved old buildings which are full of character. There are also plenty of interesting character people in the town.

Worst thing about Hastings?
It’s got to be road access to the town, especially the dreaded Bexhill Road.

How healthy are Hastings people?
I would like to see an increased level of general exercise as research seems to be showing that lack of exercise is even more detrimental to health than obesity.
